【Report】Port to Port #2 Project Report

私が今回のプロジェクトについて聞いたとき、心理セラピストとアートの関係性を考えたり、被り物がアートなのかと不思議に思ったり、zineとは何だろうと思いました。しかし、1か月という間でしたが、あなた(Mr.Denver)のおかげで芸術への考え方が変わりました。

あなたは私がデザインを学ぶことに対してかわるきっかけとなったので、あなたに出会えたことはとても良い経験だったと思います。

大学で勉強をし始めたばかりで、私自身はものづくりに大して実感がなかったのですが、あなたの作品のおかげで、発想とものづくりを繋ぐヒントを得られました。今学期、制作した大学の演習授業の最終課題では、とても良いzineとお面ができました。この写真は、制作したお面です。植木鉢や日本の正月飾りを使って日本らしさを表現しました。

今後のデンバーさんの更なるご活躍をお祈りすると同時に、私もこの経験を基にして多くのことに挑戦していきたいと思います。

 When I heard of the AIR-H project, I wondered how a psychotherapist is related to art, whether self-made masks can be a work of art, and what a zine is. However, my attitude toward art changed after I met you. 

 During your one-month stay in Hachinohe, I sometimes joined your activities. Meeting you was a very good experience for me, since you made me change my idea about studying design. As just began to study design at college, I had little interest in making art works. 

 However, thanks to your works, I got some ideas and hints for my own. I made a very nice zine and a mask for the final assignment in this semester's practicum class. This photo shows the mask that I made. I put a Japanese-style new year’s decoration and a planter onto the mask so that it would remind you of things Japanese.

 I wish you greater success in the future. I would like to try a lot of things, based on the art project experience with you.

　今回私は、海外に語学留学経験があったのでデンバーさんの通訳をやってみないかと、お誘いを受けました。はじめは不安でお話を断ろうかと考えたのですが、帰国してからは、このような機会は八戸では少ないと思い、海外で経験したことが少しでも役に立てばという思いで参加を決意しました。

　お話をいただいてからデンバーさんが来日するまで時間がなく、あまり準備ができませんでしたが、来日当日彼に会った第一印象はとてもフレンドリーで話しやすい人だと感じました。彼の人柄もあり私も積極的に話すことができ、通訳をすることができました。

　この体験から学んだことは通訳という役割は、英語のリスニングテストとは違うということです。本人に言われたことを正確に翻訳できれば最高なのですが、実際に話をしながらそれをすることはなかなかできることではありません。また、話の流れも重要です。本人が本当に伝えたいことを汲み取り、それを伝えるために部分的に聞き流すことも大切だと感じました。それはメリハリをつけて話すところ話さないところを考えながら会話することだと思いました。また、本人の表情やジェスチャーでより話が伝わりやすくなり、曖昧なニュアンスを正確に伝えることができるのだと感じました。この経験は、外国の人との会話では当然ですが、コミュニケーション全般に言えることではないかと思います。今後はこういった能力更にを伸ばし、活かしていきたいと思いました。

 Last October, Denver L. Garza, a Philippine Artist, came to Hachinohe to have a public talk about his creative work. He was going to do it in English, so a Japanese-English interpreter was needed. I was asked to be so because I had been to Canada. I had studied there for about 1 month in the spring before last. 

 At first, I was not sure if I could make it. I was not confident if I could translate what he said accurately before his audience. At the same time, however, I thought that it was important to have opportunities to use English in Japan, which is getting an English-speaking environment recently, so I accepted the offer. 

 Fortunately, there were meetings before the public talk. Mr. Denver was very friendly to everybody. He spoke very slowly without being asked to do so for me. It was easy to catch what he said. He taught me a lot of things about his artistic activities. Also, he was kind enough to answer any questions I asked. 

 While talking in English, I remembered what I had learned during my stay in Canada. When we speak English, it is important to do so with gestures and facial expressions for understanding each other. I totally forgot that because I was nervous. Thanks to Denver, I felt like I regained my confidence and understood what he said much better. 

 After all, my interpretation at the public talk was successful. I was happy to see my translation understandable to his audience. My English had improved more than better in such a short period. Life is too short to worry about little things. Now I hope that there will be another chance to interact with foreign people in Hachinohe.
